SCALE 6x Issues Call For Papers

The Linux Expo of Southern California, has opened the Call For Papers for the 6th Annual Southern California Linux Expo, to be held February 8th, 9th, & 10th, 2008. As with SCALE 5x, S6x will be held at the Westin Hotel at Los Angeles International Airport.
If youre interested in speaking at SCALE, dont wait to submit your proposal. Over their last couple of events, the Linux Expo has had many more people apply to speak than they have had speaker slots available. See the call for papers for details on how to apply for a speaking opportunity at SCALE.
Likewise, if you know someone who has something interesting to say about Open Source software, pass along the CFP to them and encourage them to apply.

PPC Nerds Updates Today

We received from an anonymous reader and are pleased to publish.

While a web site updating usually would not be news, PPC nerds is a slacker site that only updates about 2 times a year, as they are too lazy to get their duff and hit the publish button more often than that.

Great stories have been published, however most of them are old news and are about things that happened months ago.

PPC Nerds is not expected to publish again until sometime in the first quarter of 2008.

Thanks for your opinion. Unfortunately, you were wrong on the last assert :)
Most of the stories being submitted these days and during last year were press releases. As we do not support any industry and we feel like press releases are not the right way to talk to people, you can understand why this site is updated once in a while.
On the other hand we're happy there's a small community still alive around this project. Please, always consider that we did and still doing all this because we like it. We recently switched to a new, more reliable server which can share much more bandwidth. We pay for it and switched to it _silently_.
Your opinion is always welcome.

CRUX PPC 2.2.0.2 test cycle

CRUX PPC 2.2.0.2 is almost ready... here the first release candidate:

http://cruxppc.sunsite.dk/downloads/crux-ppc-2.2.0.2-rc1.iso
http://cruxppc.sunsite.dk/downloads/crux-ppc-2.2.0.2-rc1.iso.md5sum
If we get feedback that everything is alright, the stable release will come in the next two weeks.

CRUX PPC

It took a while to get ready, but the CRUX PPC Team is glad to announce that this release supports Apple PowerPC hardware (both 32 and 64bit), Genesi PegasosII (with some tweaking it should get installed on PegasosI too), Genesi EFIKA (there is a nice howto on the many ways to install Crux PPC on it) and presumably more MPC5200B boards, IBM RISC/6000 32bit CHRP and IBM pSeries. Hardware support for Apple iBooks is almost full, only the proprietary modem drivers don't seem to get along well with recent kernels; all the known issues with the 2.2rc are now solved.

Cjg contributed to the project with suggestions, a very cool kernel patch with customized logo, and by porting Ilenia to our ports layout; now you can use Ilenia as your ports/packages management tool, it's on the cd.
CRUX PPC repos now include software of daily use like OpenOffice2, mplayer, jre/jdk, eclipse and more (we hope MOL, qemu, gnash and other ports that we already have partly working) will be there soon.

The CRUX PPC Team is really looking forward to receive feedback and suggestions; The most useful thing to test is booting and disk detection on all flavours of Apple 64bit, IBM Risc/6000 and pSeries, and on Pegasos{II,I} (they don't own that kind of hardware, so even really simple tests/comments would be helpful).

So have fun and please don't hesitate to write on their Forum!

The handbook is available here:
http://cruxppc.sunsite.dk/releases/2.2.0.2/handbook.html
note that only chapters up to install chapter (included) are up to date, the upgrade chapter still refers to devfs device names, and is missing most of the notes on hardware support. Remaining chapters need small adaptation to the new ports layout and hints on how to use prt-get and ilenia on the multiarch ports tree.

And here the nice HowTo on EFIKA install:
http://cruxppc.sunsite.dk/releases/2.2.0.2/efika-howto.pdf
it will be soon ported to docbook-xml.
