The problem of hardware support is tied to kernel support for that hardware. Usually you can experience more problems when instaling on very new hardware. All the hardware i had on my G3 266 Beige desktop was perfectly supported by the 2.4 kernels shipped with Debian and YellowDog. I have no way now to test Ubuntu on it, but i am quite confident it installs just fine. You will have to use BootX for the booting, and not yaboot, but probably you're already aware of this.
