olworld hardware does not boot that way, you must use BootX in order to have it booting

I am fairly sure that YDL stopped supporting old world Macs with 3.0, the 4.0 definitely does not support old world. This isn't to say it can't be made to work, but it isn't set up for it by default. You would need to use some boot argument and perhaps a few other tweaks to get it going. You should subscribe to the ydl help list and ask there for detailed information.

I'm with this guy. Nothing I do will cause YellowDog to boot and trust me I have tried a number of things, including reading the directions.
I would love to know the secret. Simply, how do I install this thing?
Please don't refer to holding down the 'C' when booting because that simply does not work.

Re: Yellowdog Linux 4.0 on "oldworld" Macs

I did it !
To install YLD4 on oldworld machines you HAVE to start with OS9 and bootX.
Then partition the HD with 2 partitions following the YLD 3 and YLD 2 installation manuals and faq.
Then download YLD4.Remember to burn the YLD4 Cds at very low speed (2x is OK for old machines ! ).

Then read BOTH the following links BEFORE start installing:

http://www.yellowdog-board.com/viewtopic.php?p=1985&highlight=
http://www.sharplabs.com:8668/space/Installing+YDL/on+OldWorld+Macs

Start YLD4 installer and choose "manual partition" when it ask about it.
Write on paper the name of the /boot partition (you will need it for bootX next start)
After finishing the YLD4 installing, you will have to reboot (the installation process hangs searching Mac OSX).
Read vert well bootX Faq to put the right video parameters in bootX, right boot partition address (you wrote it ?) and start YLD4 in text mode. If you don't see anything, video parameters are wrong !
Edit boot config file (following URLs info) to start in graphic mode.
Reboot again and "here you go".
