I used to name all macs (15 yrs ago) as things or characters of the Robotech saga. SDF 1, Lisa (Hayes), etc. My first tangerine iMac got the name FANTA. For its looks. This marked the shift. Now our machines have litterary names. Moore spec. from the menagerie of author Tove Jansson. ~Snusmumriken

We name development machines here after islands. US/British virgin islands, Hawiian, Phillipines, etc. We try to give physically co-located systems the names of geographically co-located islands, so that it is easier to guess the building/floor/department location of the systems.

Mine is called "A present from God" cause I got it without any "human efforts": I needed it, I prayed, I got it (yeah, hard to believe, huh? ;-) but it was so :-p ).

I get to an hostname during installation; so my first set up softraid box is named SpadeQuest while my former file server kept it's name SpadeInfinity (> 20 GB); I just stick to Spade with every machine as a prefix and the rest, well just imagination martin

One set of servers is based on Aurthurian legend (including the Monty Python versions). Another machine is based on some obscure Star Trek references. Others are boring and functional names.

I've been giving my drives animal names. Bootherium Bombifrons is an extinct yak, and my favorite. Sarcastic Fringe Head is my back-up drive. The new flash-drive I got for Christmas is called Sneaker, since I didn't think of anything better yet.

All of my systems have been named for AI's in games/books/movies/ect.. My current PC is Tycho and my iBook is named Mjolnir (both from Marathon, and yes, I know that Mjolnir was not TECHNICALLY an AI, but a cyborg would have SOME AI componants.) Previous incarnations have been Hal, Leela, Durandal, Majel(in honor of Majel Roddenberry's role as the voice of the computers on StarTrek) and Viki. My friend Jack named his systems Mainframe LostAngles and SiliconTor as a refrence to the cartoon ReBoot.

Nearly every machine I have is named after a science fiction space ship (and surely I can't be alone in this). I avoid the obvious - for instance the latest one I built is known as fireball (Gerry Anderson, early sixties). Sad but true. On the other hand, this machine is called hotblack; Since its Hot, Black, and its a tribute to Douglas Adams and THHGTTG

With my nickname being Suicide, I decided to go with a sort of dark theme. I started off with the four horse men (death, pestilence, famine, war) but I quickly ran out of names. I retired war, although I might resurface it at some point. But, anyways, I picked up some other similar-sounding names to go along with the four horsemen of the apocolypse. eternity (my network) purgatory (my internet router) death (my server) famine (my big computer) sacrifice (my powerbook laptop) pestilence (a crappy pentium 1 laptop, I just haven't gotten rid of yet) Dang, do I still have that many computers?

I have the domain nomorestars.com (astronomer anagram) and usually name my machines for the stars in the Orion constellation as it was the first constellation that got me interested in Astronomy as a child because of the horse head nebula and M42.
